“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live a life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.”
– Henry David Thoreau
Our world is set up in patterns and cycles. Scientists and researchers have proven this to be true. We live consciously and unconsciously within years, time, calendars, seasons, life cycles, patterns, and much more.
On a personal level, we are conditioned to use the start of a new year as an opportunity for fresh beginnings and to realign our priorities. For me, there is something about the words “fresh start,” “reset,” and “beginning again” that offers a lightness of heart.
The word “resolution” feels antiquated. As I reflect on the definition—”a firm decision to do or not do something”—I realize how limiting it can feel. I used to make New Year’s resolutions, but I was lucky if I made it three weeks into the year before going off track! Not to mention the self-criticism that followed when I couldn’t adhere to the proclaimed goal. One of my recurring resolutions was always about weight and exercise. Can you relate?
I love the perspective my mentors have shared about setting intentions. Intentions are not just wishful thinking or fleeting thoughts. Intent is more than a mental construct; it creates an inner dialogue that generates energy from our heart and soul, encompassing both feeling and purpose.
For several years now, I have practiced setting intentions. I embrace the idea that intentions are broader and more encompassing, focusing on what I want rather than what I don’t. Mindful intentions serve as guiding principles that are flexible yet offer clear direction and focus.
Albert Einstein is often credited with the quote: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Another phrase attributed to him captures a similar sentiment: “Living a life of 90 years or doing the same thing over and over for 90 years.”
How can you shift this pattern? It’s not too late!
Set aside some time to reflect on the past year. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths, followed by deep, conscious belly breaths. Ask your heart what went well last year and celebrate those moments. What did you learn? What do you want to carry forward into the new year? Are there new areas that speak to your heart and soul? Be honest with yourself. There is an inner knowing that emerges, guiding you toward where you want to focus your energy.
This doesn’t mean other things don’t matter. Open yourself to a broader vision beyond simple goals like, “I want to lose 15 pounds,” “I will exercise more,” or “I will eat better.”
As you reflect, ask yourself: What inspires me? What stirs my heart’s desire for the future? Let go of stories and doubts that say you can’t. Your freedom lies in your ability to choose yourself first.
Intentions open you to a vibrational energy of possibility and desire. When you focus on what you truly value—love, harmony, peace, health, happiness, relationships, abundance, time, and freedom—miracles can occur.
It’s your time! Are you ready? Are you willing?
What if you create a clear intention with a desired focus and feeling for yourself? The use of “I am” brings in the vibration and energy of spirit and grace.
Here are a few examples to inspire you as you craft your own:
- I am energized and healthy in my mind, body, and spirit.
- I am grateful for my strong, vibrantly healthy body.
- I am mindfully moving my body with energy and ease.
- I am blessed and enjoying a loving relationship full of fun and adventure.
- I am grateful and overjoyed for my beautiful home filled with love and tranquility by the water.
Action steps— Often it’s the how that trips people up and can now feel flexible and freeing. You might walk, meditate, adjust your eating plan, pray, explore new activities, reduce screen time, or join a class for support. The possibilities are endless, and you get to choose. This sense of empowerment allows you to meet your intentions without feeling restricted. Intentions can shape your daily choices and actions.
My desire for you is to have an amazing year filled with love. I invite you to share some of your intentions with me. Let’s keep the energy focused on what we want to manifest in our lives!
